Barnaby Lane Founder Achieved Laid-Back Minimalism in Her Clifton Hill Edwardian Home
Known for their relaxed, modern minimalist interiors, it’s no secret that Australia is leading the way in interior design. Melbourne-based furniture design studio Barnaby Lane has encompassed Australian design practices in their gorgeous range of products. From leather sling-back chairs to woven leather and oak dining seats, the brand has defined laid-back minimalism in their designs, and you can bet we want one of each in our own homes.
It came as no surprise that Barnaby Lane owner and designer, Rae Maxwell’s, home in Clifton Hill, Victoria, is equally as stunning as the line. The area, known for its impressive Victorian architecture, is a super cool urban oasis just minutes from downtown Melbourne. The bright and airy home is everything you’d dream the thoughtful furniture designer’s home to be, at once laid-back and modern with clean lines and simple forms. The charming home has struck the perfect balance of elegance and practicality.
When the designer and her husband (plus darling daughter, Sadie) took on this renovation, they set out to create a useable family home while preserving the historic charm of the house. It’s obvious the designer played a massive role in the design of her space, with elements echoing the style of her furniture line. Not to mention, you’ll spot plenty of Barnaby Lane pieces looking right at home in this stylish bungalow which help to maintain their pared-down aesthetic!
Their space is centered on the ideals of sustainability and durability, character of Australian design, and you can bet that principle is mirrored in her furniture line. The couple even kept the original wood floors and that gorgeous Victorian chandelier in the front room.
The light-filled home feels irresistibly coastal sans kitschy shell pillows and bright turquoises. There’s no lack of natural light, with plenty of windows maintaining the bright feel through the space. Oversized sliding glass doors and a window backsplash in the kitchen ensure the combined kitchen, dining and lounge areas all feel connected to the outdoors.
While we’ve found it nearly impossible to choose a room we love most in this tasteful Melbourne residence, we definitely have an affinity for the lounge area. No detail is overlooked in the gorgeous room, arguably one of our favorite spaces in the home. The room enhances the effortless feel to the remodel while incorporating eye-catching details (hello, beautiful silvertop-ash battens)!
Don’t fret readers, Barnaby Lane has recently started shipping overseas (thank goodness), and we can all get a taste of the coveted Australian minimal aesthetic in our own homes! Now, excuse us while we scoop up the entire range of products for ourselves.
