On founding Bloomscape:

Bloomscape: Our founder, Justin Mast, comes from five generations of greenhouse growers on both sides of his family, dating back to ancestors in the Netherlands. He grew up in his parents’ greenhouse and (obviously) surrounded by plants! He loved the way plants livened up a space, but thought that the process of buying and owning plants was less than great. So, while he was working in his parents’ greenhouse after college he designed a box that allowed him to ship houseplants to his friends all over the country. This box became the core idea of making plants simple, and in March 2018, Bloomscape was born.

On having plants in your home:

Bloomscape: There’s a Dutch word, “gezellig”, which is tricky to translate in English. Basically, when a space is gezellig, it is cozy, warm and inviting, but people can be or feel gezellig as well. You might be gezellig when you see a friend for the first time in a long time, or when you’re enjoying an evening with your family. We believe plants are part of creating a gezellig home and, are an easy way for people to bring the outdoors in. Houseplants connect you back to nature and we could all use a little more nature in our lives!

On selecting the perfect plant:

Bloomscape: The real key is finding the right plant for you. Plants shouldn’t create more stress for your life! If you are busy with your kids, or travel a lot for work, choose a low-maintenance plant that will be ok even if you forget to water it once in a while. If you are looking to pour your stress into a project, choose a plant that wouldn’t mind a little fuss. The Fiddle Leaf Fig or a Calathea need some extra attention. Plants that match your lifestyle, light availability, and maintenance level will thrive, reducing stress rather than increasing it!

On plants as air purifiers:

Bloomscape: All houseplants can improve the air-quality and boost your mood. However, there are a handful that are especially adept at removing toxins—NASA says so! The Sansevieria, Burgundy Rubber Tree, Golden Pothos, and Kimberly Queen Fern are all excellent air purifying, plus, they are very easy to care for.

On mistakes most plant-owners make:

Bloomscape: Most people overwater their plants. Most houseplants do not like to sit in water. Pots with drainage holes help with this, but if your watering your plant too much, the soil is going to stay soggy and cause the roots to rot. Learn the water preference for each particular plant and be consistent with it.

On plants for beginners:

Bloomscape: The best plant for a beginner is the ZZ Plant! It’s unique, adapts to nearly every light condition, and is basically indestructible.

On factors to consider when buying a plant:

1. What level of plant care can you commit to? Before choosing a houseplant, think about your level of experience with plants and the amount of time you can actually dedicate to your houseplant. Is your life hectic? Are you running back and forth between playdates, soccer games, and birthday parties? Do you work long hours or travel frequently? A low-maintenance, easy houseplant might be best for you. Or, do you have the time or desire to devote yourself to caring for a plant that requires a little more attention? Or, maybe you’re somewhere in between. The point is, just because your life is busy doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy and benefit from a houseplant.

2. What light do you have? It doesn’t need to be said, but we’re going to say it—plants need light. But, some plants need more light than others and some plants hardly need any natural light at all. It can be tricky to determine what type of light you have. A good rule of thumb is that most houseplants will do best in spots with eastern or western facing windows (your phone probably has a compass if you need help determining which direction is which).

There are several plants, however, that will adapt to all different levels of light and even thrive in dark spots where only ambient or fluorescent light is available. So if the beige and gray walls of your cubicle are seriously getting you down, there’s a plant out there that will successfully brighten up your workspace!

3. What’s most important to you? You’ve given yourself a plant-care reality check. You’ve whipped out your compass and determined what light you have. Now, comes the fun part—why do you want a new indoor plant? Is it purely aesthetics? Do you just love the way they look? Do you like that they purify the air? Will it make you happy? Or do you want your kids to grow up with something green because you live in the city? Whatever your motivation, keep it in mind as you select your plant.

Bloomscape even boasts a Plant Mom, who’s basically your all-access plant guru, to help as your constant resource. You ask, she’s got the answer.
